Artist Residency

In addition to being an Education, Art and Social Support Center, Casa Amarela Providência also makes it possible to welcome artists in residency - from Brazil and other countries - in the Favela. In partnership with Casa Amarela, the artists articulate their work with the projects already established in the daily life of the Casa's inhabitants, such as educational, artistic and cultural workshops that generally expand throughout the territory of Providência.

This process is currently being reworked, as Casa Amarela directs its strength in actions aimed at reducing the spread of the Coronavirus and transforming the economic and social impact on the affected families.

If you are interested in participating in our residence or supporting us in our actions to combat COVID-19 and its impacts on the territory, send us your project proposal by email: casaamarelaprovidencia@gmail.com, and we will contact you soon!

Diego Mouro

In 2020, Diego spent the Black Consciousness Week with us, building his path in support of our work in art education through dance. The artist represented in his paintings the youth and participants of Casa. The mural painted by the artist makes reference to children on the move, in full performance, his work guaranteed the essence of the scene in an integral and exciting way.

Diego Mouro's artistic production has as its central focus the rescue of his ancestry. His works represent respect and honor for the stories of his ancestors who, at some point, were left behind, but now have the chance to be celebrated, altered and preserved through his paintings.

Inspired by his indigenous and African heritage, Mouro's works encourage the encounter of traditional symbols and elements of the two cultures, which mix strongly and categorically, but at the same time with lightness and poetry.

Mouro experienced several projects at the Casa, worked directly with art educator Ernane Ferreira and was invited to participate in the cultural circle with the youth. Diego leaves his art expressed on the walls of the Providência’s territory, reminding us that graffiti is a free art for all residents beyond the art galleries that do not reach the favelas.

Manoel Quiterio

Our artist resident Manoel Quiterio from Pernambuco came in our residency for a whole month to create an amazing artistic transformation in some areas of Providência, working hard with all the children, adolescents and even parents of the community. In his participatory process, he is looking to involve and impact people across the community, with no age limit or experience needed. Residents participated to every step of the process, from the choice of themes to the painting and the symbols, in a process of collective healing of the public space in order to resignify the day-to-day of Providência through colors.

Paulo Accioly

Environmental engineer (UFAL) and self-taught photographer, he has been working with photography since 2011. In search of a training that would support and help expand his artistic creations, in 2020 Paulo applied and was the only Brazilian accepted to enter the first section “Art et image ”From the Kourtrajmé school, under the direction of the artist JR, in France. Currently, Paulo acts as a visual artist, walking between digital and analog photography, collage and audiovisual, but always using collaboration as the north of his work.

During his residency, Paulo developed some projects, including the exchange program with the group from the Arts et Images session at Koutrajmé school, and the project in partnership with the art educator through dance, Ernane Ferreira, who titled the work of ErêKauã. Casa Amarela and Paulo Accioly for this work were awarded at the festivals: Hybrid Festival of Videodance and Festival of the Minute in 2021.

ErêKauã was an experimental audiovisual project that was born from the desire to merge the possibilities of experiences between Casa Amarela and Morro da Providência. In his collages, Paulo takes a look at the different landscapes of the hill, which invites the viewer to reflect on this context. For the construction of this work, we counted on the guidance of Ernane on the structural basis of the project. Ernane continued his trajectory with afro dance, research on references used in the work, elaboration of costumes, body and choreographic preparation with the protagonist Kauã Almeida, 12 years old, part of Casa Amarela since he was six years old.

Sabrina Barrios

A Brazilian artist based in NYC and Rio de Janeiro, spent two weeks in our artist residency in September 2018 to work on a very special project with the children. She created with the help and incredible determination of the children the piece of art she called, Feixe (Beam), an immersive, 4 floor experience, that depicts the current situation in Brazil, from the point of view of the neglected. It has a dialogue with the sculptures that were there previously (ex. the moon) and help inform the narrative. The work is participatory and criticizes inequality. It was a unique experience for both the children and Sabrina, who is still involved with us at Casa Amarela on a monthly basis.

Max Frieder

Co-founder and co-diretor of Artolution, a collaborative art project that has been developed all over the world in refugee camps, conflict zones in Bangladesh, Turkey, Columbia, Pakistan and even Calais in Northern France. He has spent four days with our community creating an amazing piece of art and music - the “foundstrument,” using recycled object collected around the favela by the children themselves. One of the most musical, colorful and surprising project where the children had the freedom and experience of turning everyday trash into a piece of art.

Lauren Lovette

The principal ballerina at the New York City Ballet came to visit us for a few days in December 2018 and to share some of her stories and experiences with the children. She taught a ballet class that the children are still talking about , and really spent her days in Providência receiving all the energies around and the love of the children. She learnt "to see a part of our world in a different way” during her time in our artist residency. The children learnt that ballet is a lot about discipline and attention, and they continue to grow in their understanding of respect and responsibility thanks to these type of residencies as well.
