THE AMAZON 2020
The year 2020 started with an incredible new project for our school Casa Amarela Providência, a travel to the Amazon for a group of fifteen people, most of them teenagers and educators from the community of Morro da Providência.
Thanks to the unconditional support of our donors who believed in the project and its benefits for our youth, we got to organize a one week travel to Alter do Chão and the Amazonian forest in February 2020.
The objectives of the travel were clear: to bring a completely new opportunity to a group of teenagers from the favela of Brasil, to create a deeper connection to their country and roots while meeting indigenous communities and understanding their culture along the way.
This project was the realization of a dream for both our team of educators who have worked for years to get the interest of the teenagers on subjects such as cultural valorization, respect of others’ values and cultures as well as their Afro-Brazilian heritage; but also for the adolescents who for this travel conquered unfamiliar territories while overcoming fears and doubts every steps of the way.
Our hope is for this travel to have triggered the teenagers’ consciousness about their country, and that even though their traveled locally, they’ve seen a totally new face of their people, met communities with a different way of living and appreciation for life.
We will follow up this travel adventure with future workshops and classes at our cultural school based on valorization of culture, mapping of their area and emotional support. We truly believe in these teenagers to create a better world for themselves and their surroundings through the support of people who believe in them while giving them the right tools to continue their path towards self-development, self-respect and self-care.
